Is Your Tap Water Killing You?

The Silent Enemy:

While chlorination (allegedly) eliminates waterborne diseases such as typhoid fever, hepatitis, dysentery, cholera and some forms of bacteria, mounting evidence strongly suggests that there is a serious downside to this heavily used disinfectant.

Chlorine, used to sanitise public water supplies - including swimming pools, the production of plastics, pesticides and bleached paper products - is relatively benign on its own.

In our bodies, some ingested or absorbed chlorine breaks down and may not be harmful. However, it is when chlorine reacts with organic materials that are already dissolved in the water, namely toxic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) - that health problems may be encountered.

The two main DBPs that form when chlorine reacts with organic materials are trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). THM’s are classified as a 'Cancer Group B carcinogen' and research has shown them to cause cancer in some lab animals.

These by-products are 100 times more toxic than chlorine and have been associated with heart, lung, kidney and central nervous system damage. There is also a growing concern that long term use of chlorinated water may cause some cancers.

Cause for concern?

The United States Council of Environmental Quality states, “cancer risk among people using chlorinated water is as much as 93 percent higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine.”

According to BreastCancerFund.org, “one common factor among women with breast cancer is that they all have 50 to 60 percent higher levels of these chlorination by-products (THMs) in their fat tissue than women without breast cancer . . .”

Testing Fallacy

Water companies conduct some testing on DBPs in the water, and MAY provide the results to water customers. Unfortunately, they do not disclose “it all.” Even if you get reassuring data from your water company, levels of dangerous chemicals vary considerably depending on where you are located. Hence, someone at one end of town may have low levels, while someone else a few miles away may have very high levels.

Another fact that most people don’t know is that everyone reacts to these chemicals differently. Some people have more adverse reactions than others. In addition, there are seasonal variations with respect to levels of DBPs. If organic matter in the water supply increases, DBP’s may increase accordingly.

When your water company averages all of their water tests, the average may be incredibly misleading, and may fall well below the allowable limit set by the Regulator making it appear perfectly safe.

Protect Yourself

Even if your water looks, tastes and smells perfectly fine, it may be loaded with dangerous toxins. Since you cannot always believe your local water company’s test results, it may be advisable to assume that the water is high in DBPs. Consider the water you drink, bathe in, wash your dishes and laundry in and rinse vegetables and fruits with.

According to the Journal of Public Health, “up to two-thirds of the harmful effects of chlorine are due to inhalation and skin absorption while showering.”

The best way to protect yourself and your family against the damaging long-term effects of DBPs is to install a whole-house water filter. If this is not possible, place a filter on your kitchen sink and filters in your shower heads, to start with.

Numerous studies have found that chlorine itself is not the main problem; rather it has to do with what happens when chlorine mixes with any type of organic matter present in the water such as plant residues, dead insects and other contaminants. 

In the 1970s scientists discovered that when chlorine is added to water, it forms Trihalomethanes (THMs), one of which is chloroform. This lethal gas has been used by Syria in recent years to kill thousands of innocent men, women and children. THMs are proven to increase the production of free radicals in the body and are highly carcinogenic (cancer causing). And when you drink, bathe or breathe Chlorine gas into your lungs you are combining Chloroform with living organic tissue - i.e. YOU!

Chlorine and THMs have been linked to various types of kidney and liver damage, immune system dysfunction, disorders of the nervous system, hardening of the arteries, and birth defects.

Negative Effects of DBPs, THMs and Chlorine:

We are learning the hard way that our attempts to prevent illness by adding chlorine in our domestic drinking water has contributed to another problem - the increase of cancer and heart disease. This is what some experts have to say:

"Long-term drinking of chlorinated water appears to increase a person's risk of developing bladder cancer as much as 80 percent” as documented in a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Some 45,000 Americans are diagnosed every year with bladder cancer.

The drinking of chlorinated water has now been officially linked to an increased incidence of colon cancer. An epidemiologist at Oak Ridge Associated Universities (USA) completed a study of colon cancer victims and non-cancer patients and concluded that the drinking of chlorinated water for 15 years or more was conducive to a high rate of colon cancer, according to Health Freedom News, January/February 1987.

A Final Thought: 

Do you know what happens if you put chlorinated tap water into a gold-fish bowl? The fish die. So why are millions of humans drinking and showering in a powerful disinfectant that can harm or even kill other living organisms in a matter of hours? Sadly, the answer is all too obvious: 'Ignorance and Apathy', a human sickness that has yet to find a cure!

Think about this, the UK is officially the fattest Nation in Europe, and all those fat cells trapped inside obese people contain a super-concentrated cocktail of toxic chemicals - so if you are one of them, think very carefully before going on a fast-track detox diet, you might experience some uncomfortable side effects!
